Smoky Maple Old Fashioned

  • 2 oz 60 ml bourbon or rye whiskey
  • ½ teaspoon pure maple syrup or more to taste
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters
  • 1 dash orange bitters optional but recommended
  • 1 orange peel wide strip
  • 1 large ice cube or 2 small ones
  • Optional: a small piece of oak or applewood for smoking or use a smoking gun

Method

  2. Prepare the Glass
  3. Place the large ice cube in a rocks glass.
  4. Mix the Drink
  5. In a mixing glass, combine bourbon, maple syrup, and bitters. Stir gently for about 20 seconds until well chilled.
  6. Add Smoke (Optional but Impressive)
  7. If using wood chips: ignite a small piece and trap the smoke inside the empty serving glass using a coaster. Let it infuse for 30 seconds, then pour the cocktail in.
  8. Garnish
  9. Express the oils from the orange peel over the glass by twisting it between your fingers. Rub it around the rim, then drop it in.
  10. Serve
  11. Serve immediately, savoring the aroma before the first sip.

Notes

Chef’s Tip
• For a winter variation, add a tiny pinch of cinnamon or a few drops of vanilla extract to the mix.
• To make a smoky maple bacon version, rim the glass with a small piece of crisp bacon before serving.
• A single Luxardo cherry dropped into the glass adds sweetness and elegance.
